PACS migrations, without losing a single study

Acxen moves your imaging history out of a legacy PACS and into a new PACS, a vendor-neutral archive, or the cloud, with every study reconciled and no disruption to radiologists.

When you need a PACS migration

Imaging archives outlive the systems that store them. Organizations usually come to us when:

  • Switching PACS vendors, and years of studies need to move to the new system.
  • The legacy PACS is reaching end of support or running on aging hardware.
  • Consolidating archives after a merger, acquisition, or practice combination.
  • Moving long-term storage to a vendor-neutral archive (VNA) or AWS to cut storage costs.
  • A vendor contract is ending, and you need your data exported in a usable form.

What we migrate

  • DICOM studies and series from the legacy PACS
  • Radiology reports and associated documents
  • Patient and study metadata, with identifier mapping between systems
  • Prior studies needed for comparison reads, prioritized first

How a PACS migration works

  1. Assess the archive. We inventory study counts, storage size, modalities, and data-quality issues such as duplicate or mismatched patient IDs.
  2. Plan the mapping. We agree on how patients, accession numbers, and studies map into the target system, and which studies move first.
  3. Export and transfer in phases. Studies move in batches over encrypted connections, scheduled around clinical hours so the legacy system stays responsive.
  4. Reconcile. Every batch is checked against the source so study counts match and nothing is left behind.
  5. Cut over. Radiologists keep reading throughout. The final switch happens once the archive is complete and verified.

Why Acxen

PACS migrations are infrastructure projects as much as imaging projects: networks, storage, throughput, and careful scheduling. Acxen brings hands-on infrastructure experience and a methodical, documented process, so your team always knows what has moved, what's left, and what happens next.

Based in Greenville, South Carolina, we work with imaging providers across the Upstate, the Southeast, and remotely nationwide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a PACS migration take?

It depends mostly on the archive size and how fast the legacy system can export studies. After the assessment we give you a written estimate and schedule before any data moves.

Can radiologists keep reading during the migration?

Yes. Studies move in phases around clinical hours, recent and comparison studies first, so reading continues on the current system until cutover.

Where can the migrated archive go?

To a new PACS, a vendor-neutral archive (VNA), or a cloud archive on AWS. We can also help you design long-term storage tiers to reduce cost.

How is patient data protected?

Data moves over encrypted connections, access is limited to the people doing the migration, and we follow your organization's security and compliance requirements.

What if our old vendor makes exporting difficult?

That is common. The assessment identifies the available export paths early, so there are no surprises late in the project.
